Walk On

Human beings the world over need freedom and security that they may be able to realize their full potential.
- Aung San Suu Kyi

Walk On is a song written by U2 dedicated to Aung San Suu Kyi. She was house-arrested since 1989 and is prime minister-elect of Myanmar who fought for democracy in her country.

Facts has it that, the title of the song refers to the morning of 1989, when Suu Kyi was walking with some of her supporters the military government soldiers blocked their path and pointed their rifles at them. Despite being threaten to be shot dead by the soldiers, Suu Kyi walked on and kept walking, disregarding orders to stop. In the end, despite many more threats the soldiers never fired their rifles. Nobody shot her, she's still alive until today.

Well, life as it is, there are these 'soldiers' pointing their rifles at me, they are threatening to shoot me dead. I adore Aung San Suu Kyi for her brevity. How can a woman be so brave that she still fights on when her life is at the tip of a smoking rifle, a fight that took her family and everything she owns away, in a world dominated by males?

I don't care if I have shredded my own hopes or anybody's confidence in me, I don't care what you feel or what I feel. I have a right to live and the liberty to decide on my own actions. I believe I deserve to be respected as a human being who has wants and needs. I will prove that I'm more worthy than any of you who don't deserve what you have today.
