To be honest, even though I was born and bred in Kuching, I hardly go down to the streets particularly the Kch Waterfront area except when I was little. Opposite of the river are where the Malay kampungs dwell, so whenever there's a big happening across the river everyone including the people from the kampungs would come down to support. Today is the Sarawak Regattas, which is an annual event but I can't remember the last time I seen it. This is one of the highlights because the participating teams are usually from the kampungs so people would cheer for their teams. There was also a bazaar for crafts and exhibitions, so it was quite interesting.
I loved the atmosphere. Rami macam dekat Paris tapi panas and sempit. Haha! There's one thing I noticed; teens nowadays are really into the 'indie' look. Tight pants, tight shirts, dark-colored hoodies, emo hairdos, bold statement shirts. Baggy pants, oversized shirts, chains and baseball caps are so 1998 yo! The statement shirts- they're everywhere, mostly in black. I'm not trying to be negative, but I honestly can't stand them because some of them are kinda rude- but some made me laugh.
e.g. "apa tengok2? kalau suka cakap lah." - in neon bold letters on black. LOL. Lame, but funny at first sight. Funnier if translated into Sarawakian.
I wore a kimono top with dark pants and a brown hippie bag in the the sea of greasy youngsters. I felt so uncool!! Put a little child next to me and I'd look like the mother. Uh oh...! Even though I'm totally outta the social scene, it's so good to chill along the waterfront with my family by my side. I feel safe and protected always.. Priceless. Wish you're here though, dear abang!
